The Elmendorf tear test involves creating a slit in the sample material using a cutting knife. The pendulum mechanism is then released under the influence of gravity, propagating the slit through the remaining 43mm of the sample. The energy lost by the pendulum during this tear propagation is used to calculate the average tearing force.
